What is Proprioception?

Having in-patients and being able to carry out intensive treatment programs has highlighted the benefits of meticulous work programmes and the quality of healing that I am able to achieve.

It also made me aware of how correct postural work can influence the success of returning to work after injury.

So, what is proprioception?

It is the conscious and unconscious sense of where the body is positioned.

Conscious: we tighten our core muscles and straighten our shoulders to improve our posture.

Unconscious awareness: we know where we are positioned for balance.

Kinesthesia: awareness of movement, e.g. walking blindfolded – we know we are moving!

A, B, C of PROPRIOCEPTION

A - AGILITY

Consciously alter the posture

B - BALANCE

Through training, good posture becomes a habit.

C - COORDINATION

Through correct posture training, becomes an unconscious habit of how the body is held, positioned or placed.
